Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium Information

Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium is an outdoor football stadium located on the University of Tulsa campus in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The stadium, best known as H.A. Champman Stadium, is home to the university’s Tulsa Golden Hurricane football program of the American Athletic Conference. The stadium was built in 1930 and has since grown and expanded to its current arrangement with plenty of space for 30,000 football loving fans!

History

The stadium was originally built with room for only 14,500 spectators. Originally it was known as Skelly Field and was named after William Skelly, the stadium’s primary benefactor, who was also the founder of Skelly Oil. The university won its inaugural game against Arkansas with an amazing 26-6 score on October 4, 1930.

Over time, the stadium was expanded with the north stands added in 1947 and the removal of the track in 1965. The field was renamed into Skelly Stadium around this time, as it expanded to a total capacity of over 40,000 guests. But the north stands were later removed in February 2005 to make way for the then-new Case Athletic Complex. This reduced capacity to 35,542 spectators. The stadium was later renovated from 2007-2008 further reducing capacity down to 30,000 guests in its current formation.

A recent round of renovations came on April 26, 2007, which also included the stadium being renamed Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium after the primary benefactor of this latest renovation.

Attendance Records

The stadium’s attendance record was set on September 26, 1987 when an incredible 47,350 fans came out to watch Tulsa compete against Oklahoma. Though Tulsa lost the game, it was considered by some fans as one of the most thrilling football bouts in university history.

The venue’s best attended season came in 1991, when the stadium had an average of 31,236 spectators across 7 games.
